John Ralston
President & CEO

John’s professional career has spanned major telecom equipment companies, world-leading communications research organizations, and four previous Silicon Valley wireless and fiber-optic communications start-ups. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) Working Group on Low-Complexity Video Coding. Prior to Droplet, John served as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at RedClover Networks (acquired by Oplink Communications), Vice President of Marketing at StrataLight Communications (acquired by Hitachi/Opnext), Vice President of Marketing/Vice President of Intellectual Property & Licensing at MorphICs Technology, Inc. (acquired by Infineon), Corporate Marketing Manager at SDL, Inc. (acquired by JDSU), Department Head, Exploratory Technologies at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (Freiburg, Germany), and as a Research Engineer at Bell-Northern Research (Ottawa, Canada).

For his pioneering work in high-data-rate communications, John was awarded the 1994 Prize of the German Microelectronics Society, and the 1995 Young Scientist Award. He has authored and co-authored over 150 professional publications, and given more than 60 conference and workshop presentations on a wide variety of technical and business topics. John has 8 issued patents and 10 additional pending patent applications in the areas of mobile communications, fiber optic communications, semiconductor device processing, and image capture devices. John holds B.Sc. degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering from M.I.T., a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, and a M.Sc. in Management of Technology from M.I.T.’s Sloan Business School.
